Is India Capable Of dealing with Coronavirus?

The coronavirus outbreak has claimed 4 lives in India so far. The Union health ministry on Friday said that 223 coronavirus positive cases have been reported in India so far and more than 6700 people who have come in contact with them are under surveillance.

The pandemic has started to widespread fear and panic among people. And with all the information doing rounds on social media, we sure need specialist advice to decide what’s wrong and what’s right.

Dr. Roshan Radhakrishnan, a Kerala-based doctor, did an AMA on Reddit to answer all possible doubts users have about the coronavirus. Here are some of the important takeaways from the AMA.

Q. How are people able to recover completely when there’s no cure for corona ?

A. Most of us will recover from corona with no problems.

Q. Why are not they testing people showing symptoms without a travel history?

A. The testing centers are far too few and scattered across India. And corona’s symptoms in the initial phases mimic that of a common cold or other viral fever.

Q. Do you think we are able to test enough? Do you see an outbreak in India like Italy?

A. We are definitely not testing enough. And yes, unless we actively do social distancing in the coming days, we may face a fate as bad or worse than Italy. Please do advice your friends and family to read up on self quarantine and social distancing and practise it.

Q. How would covid-19 affect cigarette smokers and marijuana users?

A. Immunity would be low and the lungs weakened. This would be easy targets for corona.

Q. I read that Zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin D could be helpful to fight the infection. Is that true and should people start taking supplements? Will people deficient in vitamins have a harder time?

A. Vitamins and Zinc aid in building immunity. It will not prevent the infection though.

Q. Do you think Indian government and it’s people are doing enough to “flatten the curve”? I see many of my friends chilling and hanging out as colleges have been closed. How harmful is this?

A. It is highly irresponsible. They are using this as an excuse to hang out instead of understanding the very reason the college is closed. Sadly, they may be healthy enough to survive but as carriers, they end up infecting people around.

Q. While traveling do handwashing with paper soap will work as affectively as a regular or Antibacterial soap ?

A. If possible, do consider using a good antibacterial soap even while traveling. Makes a big difference.

Q. Should I wear face masks if i go out.

A. Only if in crowded places or around people suspected to have/ proven to have corona.

Q. In Delhi, schools, colleges etc. have been closed till the 31st of March. Do you think this is enough time or a delay is necessary?

A. 31 March is a temporary date, I feel. I imagine proper isolation will extend to April.

Q. Do you think Indian healthcare is capable of dealing with an outbreak of cases in the future ?

A. We will struggle once Corona spread reaches Phase 3 and infection spreads through communities in large numbers, I fear. The coming weeks and probably month could be really vital.

Q. How can I self quarantine without endangering family members?

A. Avoid sharing dishes, cups, utensils, & bedding. If possible, keep one bathroom especially for you during this period.

Q. Can the Indian summer help beat the virus ?

A. No such evidence exists, yet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a people’s curfew on Sunday in an extreme step by his administration to prevent a surge in Covid-19 cases in the world’s second-most populous nation.

“This people’s curfew will in a way be a litmus test for us, for our nation. This is also the time to see and test how prepared India is for fighting off a Corona-like global pandemic,” Modi said.

“During this curfew, we shall neither leave our homes, nor get onto the streets or roam about our localities. Only those associated with emergency and essential services will leave their homes,” he said.
